How to Decorate a Small Space for the Holidays

Christmas FireplaceYou may be a small city dweller, but that doesn’t mean you need to downsize your holidays expectations with a small space to decorate. You can still go big with the seasonal cheer without cluttering every inch of your already limited space with plastic trees and tinsel. Here’s how to give your home a healthy dose of healthy spirit without overdoing it.

Declutter

Before bringing new items into your home tackle what is already there. Declutter your space by going through everything and evaluating what needs to be there and what doesn’t. You don’t want to add decorations into an already small and cluttered room, it will only make it look more disorderly. If you have larger items, you feel don’t need to be there over the holidays consider self-storage. Store everything you feel you won’t need until after the holiday season, once it’s time to replace the merriment with the original items simply swap the decorations in the self-storage unit and bring the old items out.

Cluttered…or beautiful? You decide.

Tackle The Tree

Celebrating Christmas in a small space means you might not be have room for the eight-foot tree of your dreams but that doesn’t mean you can’t show off your favorite ornaments. If you have the space consider  half tree or quarter tree that can be tucked into the corner of your home, giving the illusion of a full Christmas tree but taking up half the space. If you don’t have the room for that a mini potted tree does the trick and only takes up about a square foot of space. If you really don’t have room for a mini tree, simply show off your favorite ornaments in a large glass or crystal bowl for a festive touch.

Here’s a rather unrealistic tree for your apartment, just to let you know what ISN’T possible.

Don’t Go Overboard

Utilizing a small space tends to make people feel they need to display every star, nutcracker, holiday sign and candy cane in sight. However, when you live in a more intimate space you need to stick to a theme and create an ambiance without overdoing it. Too many conflicting colours in a small space can make it feel smaller and more chaotic.

Create an Ambiance

Never underestimate the power of a great scent. Your homes aroma goes a long way in setting an atmosphere and filling your home with gorgeous holiday aromas that can often make up for minimal space and décor. Try festive scented candles from Bath and Body Works (http://bit.ly/2hck80b) or try this recipe for a cranberry and cinnamon stovetop potpourtti (http://bit.ly/1cL49Ly) to turn your home into a beautifully scented festive experience.
